Cross-border initiatives

VSO-RAISA engages in cross-border HIV/AIDS issues. Our sponsorship of a regional meeting of the Southern Africa Mineworkers National Associations, which focused on the issue of supporting HIV/AIDS cross-border initiatives through mineworkers’ involvement in the southern Africa region, provided a regional platform for mineworkers and their communities to discuss HIV/AIDS. It also highlighted the need to revisit the labour agreements signed by various countries with the South African apartheid government (which greatly increases mineworkers’ vulnerability to HIV infection).
